When you decide you want to make your own beat, it’s easy to get put off by the thought of everything you’re going to have to buy before you can even get started. But don’t be put off – it is possible to get started on a limited budget, even if you don’t have much experience.

Hardware synthesizers were often used to create basslines and put together the instruments that make the beat sound just right. The problem with these, though, is that they make things very expensive and can cost you thousands. Plus, if you’ve never tried to make your own beat before, there could be a really steep learning curve to use the hardware.

This is why I opted for software. I use a synthesizer that I found online, called Sonic Producer, and it does everything that the hardware could, except for the fact that it’s a lot cheaper and a lot more easier to use!

Another thing that you might use is samplers to get the samples you need for your beats. These are especially important when it comes to hip hop and rap beats – many heavily feature samples. But my software also comes with a whole library of royalty free samples meaning I can use them however I want. I like the fact that it has so much choice, as it helps me to create the beats exactly as I want them to sound.
